Conflicts with Scheduling

How do I prevent overlapping appointments in my SP calendar?  Outlook lets the user know when there are scheduling conflicts. Is there a way SP can flag conflicts? SP allows me to schedule an appointment even though I am unavailable at that time. This is a real problem because I have to schedule appointments sometimes months out, so I don't want to have to check every week for the next year to ensure there are no overlaps. Please help!
