Hi John,
I have begun using Dragon naturally speaking software to dictate my notes into simple practice. Your technique (dictating through Google) is likely not HIPAA compliant, as the voice data probably goes out to Google for interpretation and back, and that stream is unprotected. This is also true for iPhone dictation. My understanding, is that the recommended practice would be to use dictation software that exists within your hardware and does not route through the cloud. The simple practice support folks had previously recommended the practice you are using, but they later withdrew that recommendation due to the above concern, although the post recommending phone dictation can still be found online. Good luck with this. -
Hey Douglas,
An excellent point. My understanding is that Google uses HTTPS to encrypt the stream which I think meets HIPAA. They published an article a while back saying that they had fixed a glitch that allowed plain-text transmission of emoji searches (from the GBoard app)but that's supposed to have been corrected.
The real answer is "I don't know" which makes me nervous!
Thanks for your feedback

Douglas C. Do you have any tips for incorporating dragon in your use of simple practice? I have broken my hand requiring surgery and will be unable to type for 8 weeks. Dragon sounds like it could be a good alternative to hunting and pecking. Thank you in advance for any assistance you could provide!

Elizabeth,
I have been successfully using Dragon home edition, version 15, with simple practice. I'm using it to dictate this response. I previously used Dragon in a clinical setting with a different electronic medical record system. I chose Dragon because I wanted to have a dictation software application that was entirely housed on my computer. It was my understanding that web-based applications, including dictation to a smart phone would not be HIPAA compliant because all of the data routes through the cloud.
I have a Dell laptop running Windows 10 Pro. I run simple practice using the chrome browser.
Although it is generally possible to dictate into progress notes within simple practice, I find that I get somewhat better accuracy dictating into the DragonPad and then pasting into the notes.
Accuracy tends to be highest when I speak in complete phrases. Other users I've spoken to agree that they accommodate to the system rather quickly.
With practice, you should be able to use the Dragon software to manage many of the tasks for which you would typically use the keyboard. I have primarily limited my I use to dictating text
I hope that this information is helpful. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

I'm also looking for a dictation option. For some reason my Mac doesn't seem to recognize SP. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. When it dictates it doubles the sentence. I'm thinking whether I should also get Dragon - home version. The Amazon review wasn't good for the Home 15.0 though. Also, I don't know if it works with Macs.

Using Dragon on new Mac. I like it for the most part as it saves time. I do notice an issue where it randomly chooses a letter and sprinkles it through my note--often at the end of sentence. If I go out and restart, it stops, but eventually comes back. The letter varies, so it's not like a key is stuck. I can't find any support at Dragon for this. Ideas?

Jennifer, how are you able to use Dragon on your Mac? I thought Nuance discontinued their Mac version? Are you using Parallel to access the Window's version? I've been pretty frustrated with the dictation software limitation for Mac. There are a number of options including buying a cheap PC computer just to download the Dragon software but none sound appealing. I would love if anyone has suggestions with this. I found a cloud based dictation software but they wanted $1200 for set up/first year and $700 each year afterwards!

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your response! For the last month I have been wracking my brain trying to solve this situation. I have been using Dragon in my current job but am leaving for private practice and wanted to continue using a dictation program for charting, but I couldn't find a software that would support Mac. I didn't realize I could just get an older version and accept that new editions won't occur. Thank you for the post!!!

It's really frustrating that we can't get HIPPA compliant dication on HIPPA compliant Simple Practice. That is one of the great advantages w/ SP. I've had trouble w/ Dragon and as I use a Mac, I also have the double printing in apple dictation mode. I wish they would fix that...still searching for dictation that is easy and automatic, HIPPA compliant and sans glitches.

Mia, as you can tell from my previous posts, I was having such a difficult time getting Dragon to work on my Mac. I learned later that you needed to allow the system to make changes (found in Settings) when you download Dragon. This may have been the reason why I wasn't able to download, using the old Dragon for Mac option. Honestly, I caved and bought a Dell. I know not many people can afford to to this, but I was desperate. There were a few other hiccups afterwards. After this was corrected, I've had a lot of success using Dragon, on my Dell computer, with SP. Let me know if you have any questions. I wish you luck!

Amber, you are so thoughtful to take the time to respond! And so quickly! Thank you. I am afraid I am not as savvy with using any computer but a Mac, so I may have to just live with this frustration...I admire your flexibility and your fortitude. If I ever try Dragon again, I will be referring to your advice -- big time. With gratitude.

Mia - you're welcome! I can't begin to explain to you the stress and headache this was for me - trying to get Dragon to work on the Mac and later, Dell. I swear I thought it was possessed and out to get me! LOL If I could help any soul from experiencing the same suffering, I'm there! I agree with you that SP needs to have a dictation option since it's such a great way to do our notes efficiently. Be safe and healthy.
