    Hi Sylvie,

I would be happy to provide some information here on this.

HSA and FSA cards do require that your business have a special classification (called an MCC or Merchant Category Code) set so that the card companies know that your products and services are directly related to a client’s medical needs. SimplePractice accounts set up through Stripe are actually automatically assigned an HSA/FSA eligible MCC.

Bear in mind, just because an account is enabled to accept HSA or FSA payments, that doesn’t guarantee a card won’t still be declined. Card issuers are still at liberty to authorize or decline any payment as they would with any other type of credit card. With HSA/FSA cards, cards are often declined due to either insufficient funds or due to certain usage rules put in place by the card issuer. To gain clarification on why a client's FSA/HSA card was declined and to receive assistance, you'll need to reach out directly to the client's card issuer.

I use FSA cards on my little card device and it only gets declined when the funds run out. I never created an MCC. Clients pay before leaving the session.

Does anyone know what notification you will get if there are insufficient funds?  Will a portion of the payment go through if there is a small amount left in the HSA?

    Hey Elizabeth,

I would be happy to answer this for you. Online Payments will not go through unless there are sufficient funds on the card.

If we can further assist with this issue in any way, please send in a support ticket to us.

Do you process the HSA card as a credit card?

Hi Meredith, yes. You can enter and charge HSA cards the exact same way you would with a normal credit card.

The system will not accept my clients FSA card for payment, is there a resolution for this?  When I try to add the card number I get a message that says "your card does not support this type of purchase

Hi Jacqueline, SimplePractice allows you to run HSA and FSA cards by default. If you're having trouble running the card, confirm with your client that the balance on the card covers your fee, and if you continue to experience issues you or the client can contact the card issuer to ensure that you can run future payments.

My clients HSA card is declined every time I try to process a payment, and they've confirmed they have a large enough balance to cover the cost. I've also had the client re-enter their card information to confirm it's accurate. However, it's still not working. Please help. Thank you!

Getting an error processing a clients payment that we have not gotten before:

    "Payment could not be created

Your card does not support this type of purchase."

How can a card that previously was ok suddenly not approve a psychiatrist payment?

    Hi Kimberly,

I see that my colleague Lindsay was able to work with you.

    I'm getting this same error

"Payment could not be created.  Your card does not support this type of purchase." When I try to use HSA cards.  I didn't have this problem before Covid and switching to Telehealth.  Could that be the problem?  Did anyone figure out how to fix this?

Hi Stephanie, HSA and FSA cards restrict spending on a quarterly basis. October 1st marked a new quarter, this may explain why the card you previously charged, can no longer be charged. To be sure, I'd recommend reaching out to our Online Payments Team by submitting a Help Request
