HSA Cards
AnsweredI would like to be able to accept my client's HSA cards through Stripe. But I have read that I need an MCC code? Does anyone know how to get the right one assigned?

Hi Sylvie,
I would be happy to provide some information here on this.
HSA and FSA cards do require that your business have a special classification (called an MCC or Merchant Category Code) set so that the card companies know that your products and services are directly related to a client’s medical needs. SimplePractice accounts set up through Stripe are actually automatically assigned an HSA/FSA eligible MCC.
Bear in mind, just because an account is enabled to accept HSA or FSA payments, that doesn’t guarantee a card won’t still be declined. Card issuers are still at liberty to authorize or decline any payment as they would with any other type of credit card. With HSA/FSA cards, cards are often declined due to either insufficient funds or due to certain usage rules put in place by the card issuer. To gain clarification on why a client's FSA/HSA card was declined and to receive assistance, you'll need to reach out directly to the client's card issuer.

Hi Jacqueline, SimplePractice allows you to run HSA and FSA cards by default. If you're having trouble running the card, confirm with your client that the balance on the card covers your fee, and if you continue to experience issues you or the client can contact the card issuer to ensure that you can run future payments.

My clients HSA card is declined every time I try to process a payment, and they've confirmed they have a large enough balance to cover the cost. I've also had the client re-enter their card information to confirm it's accurate. However, it's still not working. Please help. Thank you!

Hi Kimberly,
I see that my colleague Lindsay was able to work with you.
For future reference, the quickest way to get support for account-specific questions is to send us a help request by clicking the blue question mark icon on the lower right of your SimplePractice account > clicking Get Help. For more details, feel free to check out this Help Center guide: Logging in to SimplePractice and submitting help requests.
Although we're periodically monitoring the Community Forum, this is also a place for customers to exchange ideas and engage with one another on how to best use our platform. Thank you all for acting as resources for each other in the meantime.

Hi Stephanie, HSA and FSA cards restrict spending on a quarterly basis. October 1st marked a new quarter, this may explain why the card you previously charged, can no longer be charged. To be sure, I'd recommend reaching out to our Online Payments Team by submitting a Help Request.

Hi, I need assistance with a client who is attempting to add a health savings account to pay for therapy. I keep getting messages about "Your card does not support this type of purchase." Please advise. Kira@Harkinscounseling.com.
