No Diagnosis
AnsweredI am surprised no one else has asked this yet. What do I do if I am meeting with a self-pay client who has no diagnosis, but still wants therapy? Is there some way that I can mark that as NO DIAGNOSIS?

I'd be happy to help with your question. If you are continuing to have sessions with a client, and you don't want a previous diagnosis to continue to be applied past a certain date, there is a way to get these results.
First, you can add a Chart Note to the date at which you consider the diagnosis ended. This Chart Note can explain the situation for future reference.
Next, click +Create New > Diagnosis and Treatment Plan. When the page comes up to add a diagnosis, change the date to the same date you chose for the Chart Note, and click the button that says "Skip to Treatment Plan".
When the choices are presented for creating a Treatment Plan, click the option towards the top for "Back to Overview".
The client will now have a "None Selected" diagnosis, and this is how the Diagnosis area will appear on records for future sessions.

What if we want to put in a dummy diagnosis? We need to track EAP authorization sessions that are billed independently of Simple Practice. We'd like to set up the EAP company as an 'insurance' company, so that the total dollar amount due from the EAP plan shows due from that company, and when clients see their balances on the portal, the EAP sessions are NOT included, as they are not responsible for those amounts. In other EHR's I can assign a "dummy" made-up diagnosis so that the system will go through the motions and invoice the sessions... Is this possible?

Hi Carol, I'd be happy to help. You cannot create claims in SimplePractice without a diagnosis entered for the client. However, you can definitely add an EAP and associate it with your clients as an insurance payer, and add the client's responsibility (if any) to the Co-Pay field under Edit > Billing and Insurance. You can create invoices for your clients with their responsibility without a diagnosis. Let me know if you have more questions about how to accomplish this with SimplePractice.

Well, the issue is that there is no client amount due when recording EAP's...the full amount billed is expected from the EAP company.I am a biller for multiple providers, and in other EHR's, I can set up the EAP company as a "paper" insurance company (because they have proprietary billing forms/procedures), and I can set up a false DX, such as "NO_DX" and assign that to the client...as the practitioners do not assign a diagnosis for EAP services...so that they system will invoice the sessions.When invoiced, the amounts show as due from "XYZ EAP company", which is technically correct.When we have to bill these services under a client (which we do in order to track the sessions), it skews their balance, so that when the client checks in on the portal, they see all these extra charges - that they are not responsible for - as part of their balance until we receive payment from the EAP company. It also makes reports later on appear that more has been collected from clients and less has been collected from "insurance" companies than is true/accurate.It is, in my opinion, not an accurate reflection/tracking of where we expect to receive payment from and/or who owes it. This issue has also surprised a couple of clients who thought they were being billed for these services.While I am disappointed that there is not another work-around for this situation, I do appreciate receiving a definitive answer.
