Download medical record

  • Nicole “Nikki” Schwartz

Under Settings in the drop down left hand menu, once you click you’ll see a new menu on the left hand side. Choose Data Export. It’ll give you options on exporting your whole practice or a specific client. Once it’s done it’ll give you a link and password to download the portion of the file you selected.

I know some providers will give that link to a patient/client or another provider with a release. I don’t, since there isn’t a way to exclude Psychotherapy notes (which is stored separately) from the download if you choose to include documentation.

In any case, you will download a zipped file and can include the parts of the file that are relevant, rezip and email them or print them or fax them.

I am doing this, but the receiving parties say they can't access the files and are getting messages stating that their browser isn't supported by simple practice.  These are attorneys that are requesting records.

I'm having the same issues as Andrew. I am sending records to a client's new therapist, and they are unable to open the file. Can someone help?

Andrew & Bethany, I would contact tech support and see if they can help you find out where in the process things are going wrong.  If you’re giving them the link, make sure that they are using Chrome (at least I’ve read that’s the most supported browser for SP)?  And that they’re using the link before it expires.

If you are able to open the folders that you’ve downloaded and are rezipping them, it might be that process is somehow corrupt or that it’s too big still to be emailed.  Or it could be something else entirely.

I don’t know that that’s very helpful, I would message tech support with the button at the bottom of the screen and see what they can help you with. (I’m a user like you all, so my knowledge is only from my own troubleshooting and experience.)

I am having a similar problem, but I can't open the file. On Therapy Notes this was SO SIMPLE.

Hi Everyone, the Data Export link is usually password protected and expires in 24 hours. If you're trying to open the link from a Safari browser, I'd recommend switching to Chrome, or Firefox. You'll want to click on the link within 24 hours of generating it, "Copy" the password from your Settings > Data Export page, download the zip file, then enter the password to open it. Now you can share these files with other providers, or people outside of SimplePractice. You can also disable the Password Protection feature from Settings > Data Export before you generate the link, but we still recommend you be the one to download the zip file and sharing the opened files with personnel outside of your account.
