Check your state. In Virginia we file therapy to Medicare Part B as primary. Then once the primary claim comes back with a payment you will file a secondary claim to aarp for the remainder. However, in most cases Medicare will automatically cross the claim over to aarp for you.

I have a nutrition practice in New Jersey and we are also supposed to bill medical nutrition therapy to Medicare Part B. Would this mean that I need to use the MBI in the claim as opposed to the Membership ID on the AARP card?

Because those are two different insurances, you are using two different numbers. The MBI is for the primary insurance claim and goes on the initial claim. The AARP is a secondary insurance and will only go on the secondary claim once the primary pays you.
