unlocking a locked note

I am unable to unlock a note.  The lock icon does not even appear for me to do this.  What am I missing?

  Hi Lauren,

  If the lock icon is not appearing, this is because you don't have permission to unlock a note. If you have a supervisor, that supervisor will need to unlock a note for you. I recommend contacting your supervisor to request that they unlock the note that you need access to editing.
