need to share screen and then see client

I am having trouble sharing my screen.  It won't let me and the tab is grayed out.  I tried going into system preferences but it isn't working.  Also I want to see my client but share my screen both at the same time.  I do a lot of exposure therapy ERP/phobias and we often watch things online or I am pulling up articles to read, pictures, etc.  this is essential for my work.  Let me know if this is possible and can someone meet with me to figure this out.  thanks.
