If a client’s services are paid for by a third party, you can set up access so the third party can view and pay outstanding balances on the client’s behalf through the Client Portal.

Managing third party billing for an individual client
Note: This workflow can also be used for each individual client involved in a group.
To allow the third party billing access for a client, you can add the third party as a contact. To do this, see Adding contacts to existing clients.
When you're adding the third party as a new contact, make sure to:
- Add their email address
- Use the dropdown menu under Permission to select Email ok
After saving the contact, navigate to Manage Client Portal & Billing for the contact. To do this, see Managing contact profiles.
In the Manage Client Portal & Billing panel:
- Select Responsible for billing so billing documents list the contact as the responsible party
- Select Allow Client Portal access so that the contact can access the Client Portal
- Click Save
After clicking Save, open Manage Client Portal & Billing again and select the following:
- Select Access this Client's billing documents to allow the contact to view billing documents
- Select Pay a balance with credit card using Stripe, if you have an online payments account
- Click Save
Managing third party billing for a couple client
If you have a couple client, there's no way to add a contact for the couple's profile. However, you can add the third party as an insurance payer in your SimplePractice account.
To add the third party as an insurance payer, follow the same steps as you would an EAP. For more information, see Manually adding an EAP to your insurance payers list.
Once the third party is added as an insurance payer, add them to the couple's profile. For more information, see Adding an EAP to your client's profile.
Once added to the couple profile, you can manually share billing documents with the third party outside of SimplePractice, and record their payments as an insurance payment. To learn more, see Adding an insurance payment.
