We’ve created an interactive demo for you to explore how a pre-session summary is created. To view this demo, see Generate a summary to prepare for a session.
To do this from your calendar:
- Select the upcoming appointment
- Click Generate next to Session prep
You can do this from the side panel of the appointment page.
Note: Progress notes and psychotherapy notes are now accessed from a single Note tab within your appointment page. We’re in the process of updating content to reflect this change.
You can also do this from the Overview tab within the appointment page.
Within minutes, a pre-session summary will appear under Session prep.
This pre-session summary will include any clinical alerts and a last session summary.
You can click Refresh to reload the note if you added additional information to the client’s last progress note.
The pre-session summary references the client’s last progress note. If there wasn’t any information to pull from, a pre-session summary won’t generate and you’ll see the following note:
To give feedback about the summary that was generated:
- Scroll to the bottom of the note and click How was this summary?
- Choose a 1-5 rating
- Add comments in the text field
- Click Submit

Can a summary be generated from past appointments where note taker was not used? Can data be pulled from manually added notes?
Yes, a pre-session summary can be generated with information from past progress notes you’ve manually written for that specific client. The previous progress notes don't have to be created from Note Taker in order to generate a summary.
What are Clinical alerts listed under Session prep?
Clinical alerts are a section of the Session prep overview that specifically surface critical information such as safety concerns, medication risks, or recent escalations in care.
Where does the pre-session summary pull information from?
Pre-session summaries only pull information from that particular client's previous progress note. The ability to generate a pre-session summary is available for all clients as long as you have Note Taker turned on in your SimplePractice account.
