Using snippets

Snippets let you save commonly used text or phrases so you can quickly reuse them while you're writing client documentation in SimplePractice. You can use snippets in an administrative note, chart note, progress note, psychotherapy note, other document, or a diagnosis & treatment plan.

Note: In progress notes, snippets are only available in long answer (multi-line text) fields.

Managing snippets

To manage your snippets, click the lightning bolt icon in the text toolbar when you're working on a client's documentation.

Next, select Manage snippets.

To create a new snippet, select + New snippet.

When you add a title and text for your snippet, these items will save automatically. You can confirm the last autosave time in the lower-right corner of the snippet editor.

You can edit an existing snippet by selecting it from the middle column, then making your changes.

You can also use the three horizontal dots to duplicate, move, or delete a snippet.

Adding a snippet to your documentation

To use a snippet:

  1. In the text toolbar, click the lightning bolt icon
  2. Select Your snippets, Practice snippets, or another folder
  3. Choose the snippet you want to use
  4. Click Use snippet

Sharing snippets with your group practice

You can share snippets with your group practice by duplicating a snippet from Your snippets and moving it to Practice snippets.

Note: There isn’t a way to share snippets with clinicians outside your group practice.

To share a snippet:

  1. In the text toolbar, click the lightning bolt icon > Your snippets
  2. Select the snippet
  3. Click the three dots > Duplicate snippet
  4. Update the title or text if needed
  5. Click the three dots > Move to > Practice snippets

Using snippet folders

You can organize snippets by creating custom folders under Your snippets or Practice snippets.

To create a folder:

  1. In the text toolbar, click the lightning bolt icon > Your snippets
  2. Select Practice snippets if the folder will be shared
  3. Click + New folder
  4. Enter a folder name

Accessing snippets for each team member’s role

In a group practice, snippet access depends on a team member’s role. The table in this section outlines who can view, use, edit, and share snippets in Your snippets and Practice snippets.

Team member role Access to snippets
  • Account Owner
  • Clinician with entire practice access
  • Can view, use, edit, delete, and duplicate all snippets in the Practice snippets folder and in their own Your snippets folder
  • Can move all snippets from the Practice snippets folder into their own Your snippets folder
  • Can move any snippets from their Your snippets folder to the Practice snippets folder
  • Can create, rename, and delete custom folders under Your snippets and Practice snippets folders
  • Clinician with full client list access
  • Clinician with billing access
  • Clinician with basic access
  • Supervisor (with or without a clinician role)
  • Can view, use, edit, duplicate, and delete all snippets in their own Your snippets folder
  • Can view and use all snippets in the Practice snippets folder, even snippets that they didn’t create
  • Can move any snippets from their Your snippets folder to the Practice snippets folder
  • Can only move snippets they created from the Practice snippets folder into their own Your snippets folder
  • Can only edit, delete, and duplicate snippets in the Practice snippets folder that they created

FAQs


Does SimplePractice provide snippets?

If Behavioral health therapy, Chiropractic, or Speech-language pathology is selected at Settings > Profile > Clinical info, you’ll have access to a SimplePractice snippets folder with commonly used snippets.

Can I add macros to snippets?

Note: Macros are only available on the Essential and Plus plans.

When editing a snippet, you can add macros that'll auto-populate client information, such as client name or next appointment details.
