Using the Financial performance page

The Financial performance Insights page helps you track income across your practice. To access this Insights page, navigate to Analytics > Insights > Financial performance.

The Financial performance page includes the Cumulative income and Average income per completed session metrics.

Important: If a practice manager doesn’t have the permission to View financial dashboards and reports, they won’t be able to view the Financial performance Insights page. To give this permission to a practice manager, see Updating a team member’s roles.

In this guide, we’ll cover:

To learn about other Insights pages and metrics, see Introducing the Insights tab.

Note: This feature is being released in phases. If you currently don't see this feature in your account, it'll become available as the rollout continues.

Overview of the Cumulative income metric

The Cumulative income metric appears by default when you view the Financial performance page.

Important: This metric represents actual funds collected based on what is recorded in your account (cash basis). It may differ from your total invoiced amount for services rendered.

For this metric, income is defined as the total amount of client and insurance payments recorded. The total income for the selected timeframe appears in the top left corner of the graph.

Use the From dropdown to change the timeframe. This metric supports monthly, quarterly, and yearly timeframes.

This will group income by weekly or monthly periods. You can hover over a point in the graph to view the cumulative income recorded for that week or month.

Note: Payments are included in a week or month based on their payment dates. This also applies to the Average income per completed session metric.

Setting a goal for the Cumulative income metric

You can set a monthly goal for the Cumulative income metric. To set a monthly target:

  1. When viewing the Cumulative income graph, click the gear icon in the top right
Financial performance page showing the cumulative income chart. A blue arrow points to the gear icon in the chart's upper-right corner, used to access metric settings.
  1. Toggle Goal on
  2. Enter a Monthly target for your income
Financial performance page with the Income settings panel open. A blue arrow points to the Monthly target field set to $500, with the Goal toggle enabled.
  1. Click Save

When you set a monthly target, a goal line will appear on the Cumulative income graph. This line shows your projected income over the selected timeframe if your practice remains on track to meet the monthly target.

Important: Projections are automated estimates based on current goals and are for informational purposes only. They do not guarantee future financial results.

The projected goal amount for a time period also appears as the Goal pace in the Data table.

The Goal pace amount is cumulative. Each week or month shows the income expected by that point to stay on track for your monthly target.

Overview of the Average income per completed session metric

Other than Cumulative income, you can also view a metric for average income per completed session. To do this, click the dropdown under Show me and select Average income per completed session.

Financial performance page displaying average income per completed session of $7 for last quarter. A blue line chart shows weekly income averages, with peaks in late July and early September.

At the top left of the graph, you’ll see the practice-wide average income per completed session for the metric’s timeframe. Like the Cumulative income metric, income is defined as the total amount of client and insurance payments recorded.

Important: Average income per completed session is one measure of operational efficiency and does not reflect the full scope of a clinician's work. This data is most meaningful when considered alongside factors such as clinical caseload complexity and individual clinician and practice goals. Please ensure your use of this data complies with applicable employment laws and your internal practice policies.

Use the From dropdown to change the metric's timeframe.

You can also use View by to group the data by time or clinician. The graph displays different information depending on whether you group the data by time or clinician. The sections below explain how to interpret each view.

Viewing by time

By default, the metric groups data by time. In this view, the average income per completed session will be based on each time period within the metric's timeframe.

Note: You’ll only be able to select quarterly and yearly timeframes for this metric. Quarterly timeframes display data by week, while yearly timeframes display data by month.

You can hover over a point in the graph to view details for that period.

The table below explains the data shown when you hover:

Viewing by clinician

Highlights for the Financial performance page

You can see the following highlights for the Financial performance page:

  • Rate of change: Indicates whether your practice’s cumulative income has increased or decreased compared with the previous week, month, quarter, or year
  • Goal: Indicates whether the current income (month-to-date) is behind your practice’s expected pace for your monthly target

Scenarios that may affect the Financial performance page

Below are a few scenarios that may impact the Financial performance page.

Note: For additional scenarios that may affect a metric, click the question mark icon while viewing it or click Metric guide in the top right corner of the page.

Will all my payments be included in the metrics?

If a client or insurance payment isn’t recorded in the account, it won’t be included as income in the metrics under the Financial performance page. If you need to manually record payments, see:

Unallocated insurance payments, as well as payments associated with deleted clinicians, are included when calculating for practice-wide amounts for Financial performance metrics. However, if you’re viewing the Average income per completed session metric by clinician, these payments won’t be included.

Why is there a skew in my income?

Payments are associated with a certain time period or clinician based on its payment date, rather than its associated date of service or the invoiced amount. With this in mind, data in the financial performance metric can vary depending on how payments are recorded. For example, if a majority of client and insurance payments are logged with a certain payment date, this will skew income to that payment date.
