What is a 1099-K form?
The 1099-K is an informational form that summarizes the credit card sales activity of your account and is designed to assist you in reporting your taxes. Each year, the IRS requires our payment processor to provide a 1099-K for accounts that met all of the following criteria in the previous calendar year:
- Account is based in the United States
- More than $20,000 USD in total gross volume and 200 transactions
Note: Some states have lower threshold requirements. For more information, see Which states have lower threshold requirements? below.
To learn more about your 1099-K, see the IRS guide on Understanding your Form 1099-K. To download a blank example of the form, see 1099-K example.
Does my practice qualify for a 1099-K?
For most accounts, a 1099-K is automatically generated if your practice processed at least $20,000 in total volume and at least 200 individual card transactions through SimplePractice during the previous calendar year. However, exceptions may apply depending on your state.
Our payment processor issues a 1099-K for each unique tax identification number (TIN), such as a Social Security Number (SSN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN), that meets IRS processing thresholds. In some cases, you may receive a 1099-K even if an individual account does not meet the threshold.
Some examples include:
- You have two accounts with the same TIN; one meets the IRS threshold and one does not. Each will receive a 1099-K
- You have two accounts with the same TIN; neither meets the threshold individually, but together they meet it. Each will receive a 1099-K
- Your business is based in a state with a lower threshold than the federal requirement
To learn more about how 1099-Ks are issued, see our processor’s guide on 1099-K forms issued.
Where do I find my 1099-K form?
All qualifying customers are notified by email once their 1099-K is available. If you qualify, you can access your form in Settings > Practice > Business files.
Note: See What information can I change after my account has been verified? for details on editing your online payments profile.
How do I opt in for electronic delivery of my 1099-K form?
If you qualify for a 1099-K, you’ll be notified electronically and can access the form directly in your SimplePractice account. Physical copies are not mailed.
By accepting our Terms of Service, you consent to SimplePractice or Stripe, our payment processor, sending tax forms, notices, or returns (including informational returns such as 1099s) via email or other electronic formats.
How will I receive my 1099-K if I no longer have a SimplePractice account?
If you qualify for a 1099-K but no longer have a SimplePractice account, the form will be mailed to the business address associated with your online payments account.
The 1099-K will be postmarked by January 31, 2025. If you expect a form but haven’t received it by that date, please submit a help request to our team.
What information is included on the 1099-K?
The 1099-K includes important details about your practice and income for the tax year, including:
- Your practice contact information
- The EIN or SSN used for your online payments account
- The number of charges processed through online payments during the calendar year
How is my 1099-K calculated?
Your 1099-K reflects the total amount of online payments processed during the tax year. Only payments with an estimated payout within that year are included. The form does not include:
- Refunds that were issued
- Disputes that occurred
- Other payment methods, such as cash, check, or external card
Your Annual financial activity report lists online payments based on the date they were added, not the estimated payout date. It also includes refunds, disputes, and non-online card payments added during the year. For details, see Annual financial activity report FAQs.
Which states have lower threshold requirements?
Some states have lower thresholds for issuing a 1099-K. If you don’t meet your state’s threshold, a 1099-K won’t be issued for your account.
To confirm whether your state requires a 1099-K, we recommend consulting a tax professional.
Does each member of a practice receive a 1099-K?
Accounts that qualify for a 1099-K will only receive one per practice, which can be accessed by the account owner. Additional 1099-Ks won't be generated for individual team members.
