If you're part of a group account, you may have a pre-licensed clinician under supervision, or a clinician that will be supervising pre-licensed clinicians. You can designate whether a clinician is a supervisor, and whether another clinician is a supervisee under them.
Note: A supervisor can have an unlimited number of supervisees, but a supervisee can only have one supervisor.
In SimplePractice, supervisors can review pre-licensed clinicians' documentation, and supervisees can also bill insurance. For more information, see Reviewing and signing documentation under supervision and Billing insurance under supervision.
In this guide, we’ll cover:
- Designating a team member as a supervisor
- Indicating that a team member is a supervisee
- Can a supervisor be supervised by another team member?
Designating a team member as a supervisor
If you're the Account Owner or practice manager, you can add the Supervisor role when you're adding a team member, or editing the roles of an existing team member.
For more information, see:
To learn about permissions for the supervisor role, see Supervisor.
Indicating that a team member is a supervisee
Important: The team member must already be added to the account before they can be listed as a supervisee. When adding a clinician to your account, license information and an NPI number won't be required.
Once the Supervisor role is assigned to a team member, the Account Owner and practice manager can determine other team members under their supervision. To do this:
- Navigate to Settings > Team > Team members
- Select the name of the supervisee
- Next to Clinical info, click Edit
- Toggle Under supervision on
- Select a supervisor from the dropdown menu
- Click Save
- Repeat these steps for each supervisee in your group practice
The team member can also designate themselves as a supervisee with the steps below:
- Navigate to Settings > Profile > Clinical info
- Next to Clinician details, click Edit
- Under Licensure type, select Pre-Licensed
- Below Supervisor, select the supervising clinician
- Click Save
Can a supervisor be supervised by another team member?
Team members with the supervisor role can’t be designated as supervisees. If a supervisor should also be listed as a supervisee, the team member can have an account for each role. To do this, the Account Owner or practice manager can:
- Remove the supervisor role from the team member’s current account
-
Make another account for the team member and assign the supervisor role
- Use the clinician’s exact name for the new account
-
No clinician roles should be assigned
- Adding a supervisor is free on the Plus plan
- To use the same email address of the clinician’s current account, see Adding team members or clients using the same email address
-
Designate the new account as the supervisor for the supervisees
- Supervisees can also set the new account as their supervisor themselves
