Navigating the appointment page

After an appointment is scheduled in SimplePractice, it’ll have its own appointment page. From the appointment page, you can view appointment details, access related tools, and attach files to the appointment.

Through the appointment page, you can also manage progress notes and psychotherapy notes for the appointment, and track treatment progress for diagnosis and treatment plans created with a Wiley Treatment Planner. For more information, see:


Accessing the appointment page for a date of service

To access an appointment page for a date of service, click the Appointment associated with the date of service from the client’s Overview page.

You can filter the client’s Overview page for a certain appointment by:

  • Selecting All Time and adjusting the date range
  • Selecting All Items > Appointments

If a note hasn’t been added or signed for an appointment, you can also access an appointment page from the calendar by clicking the progress note icon for an appointment in the Day or Week view.

You can also click on the appointment itself on the calendar, then select Add note or View note.

The appointment page provides relevant information for a client and their appointment. Your clients’ contact information and date of birth are located at the top of the page.

On the top right of the page, you'll have several options.

From left to right, the options are:

  • Paper clip icon: Upload or view a file associated with an appointment
    • For more information, see Attaching a file to an appointment
  • Clock icon: View a client's documentation history
    • For more information, see Viewing documentation history
  • Speech bubble icon: View Secure Messaging conversations with the client
  • Note Taker: Start using Note Taker for an appointment
  • + Diagnosis: Add a new diagnosis and treatment plan for a client

Note: Only some options may appear, depending on the status of the progress note, diagnosis and treatment plan, and other documentation for the client.

Under Appointment Details, you can view the appointment’s date, time, status, duration, and location. If you need to correct the date, start time, or duration for a date of service, click Edit.

You can also click Open in calendar to jump to the calendar in another tab, where you can update other details, such as the clinician or location assigned to the appointment.

Under Services, you can view the appointment’s billing code(s) and their respective fees. In the Billing section, you’ll find the billing type, appointment total, and payment status. Selecting Open billing will take you to your client’s Billing tab, where you can view or edit the appointment’s billing details.

Note: The billing details for an appointment will only appear if they have the appropriate access level. To learn more, see Clinician roles available for team members and Administrative roles available for team members.

In the Appointments section, you’ll also see the client’s previous and next appointments, if applicable. If needed, you can select either appointment to view its respective appointment page.

Note: You can select the Treatment progress tab next to the Note tab to track treatment progress for a client that has a Wiley treatment plan. For more information, see Tracking treatment progress.


Attaching a file to an appointment

To add an attachment to a progress note, click the paper clip icon.

Clicking this icon will open the Attachments column. To upload a file, select the file you'd like to attach, and click Upload. Uploaded files for an appointment will appear in the column.

Note: Uploaded files will also appear under the Appointment in the client's Overview page.

If a file is associated with an appointment, the paper clip icon will appear with a blue circle.

Viewing documentation history

In the appointment page, click the clock icon to view the client's documentation history.

After clicking the clock icon, you'll be able to view the client's past:

  • Chart notes
  • Diagnosis and treatment plans
  • Mental status exams
  • Other documents
  • Progress notes
  • Psychotherapy notes
  • Questionnaires

You can also:

  • Adjust the date range by clicking All Time
  • Filter for document type by clicking All Items
  • View current treatment plan or Add diagnosis
