Once your NPI number and prescribing license(s) are verified, you’ll be invited to complete registration and the identity proofing process (IDP) via email.
Note: If you’re ePrescribing as a pre-licensed clinician under supervision and bill insurance, we recommend submitting claims outside of SimplePractice. For more information, see Can I submit claims if I’m ePrescribing as a pre-licensed clinician under supervision?
Your next steps will depend on whether you prescribe controlled substances, non-controlled substances, or both.
For more information, see Completing registration and identity proofing.
Completing registration and identity proofing
If you prescribe controlled substances, or both controlled and non-controlled substances, see Completing EPCS registration for ePrescribe.
If you prescribe non-controlled substances only, see Completing registration for ePrescribe (non-controlled substances).
Adding Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) to your account
You can add the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) via DrFirst to your SimplePractice account so that PDMP checks are directly integrated into your ePrescribing workflow. This allows you to meet state requirements for ePrescribing checks, without having to log into the state prescription monitoring program site separately.
To set up PDMP, there’s a one-time non-refundable setup fee of $699 + tax, if applicable, per practice and after setup is complete $6.25/month + tax per clinician. PDMP is only accessible to ePrescribers within the DrFirst panel.
Note: The monthly clinician fee of $6.25/month may be waived. For more information, see What states have a subsidy available for PDMP fees?
Only the Account Owner can request PDMP be added for the practice or for any clinician.
To add PDMP to your practice, reach out to our Customer Success team.
Important: If you’d like to add PDMP for any of the following states, there are specific instructions and possible additional fees associated with your integration: California, Illinois, Maryland, Nebraska, and Washington. Our Customer Success team will send you additional information required when you confirm which state you’d like integrated.

Can I access ePrescribe outside of the US?
There isn't a way to access ePrescribe outside of the US through SimplePractice. You can only access DrFirst from an IP address based in the United States. This means that you won’t be able to access the DrFirst ePrescribe window if you’re outside of the US.
Can I ePrescribe in multiple states?
Yes, you can ePrescribe medication in multiple states, as long as you have the following for each state:
- A valid license for each state where you’ll ePrescribe
- A unique DEA number for each state (required if you prescribe controlled substances)
First, make sure to add each state license and associated DEA number at Settings > Profile > Clinical info.
Once you’ve added each state license and associated DEA number, reach out to our team.
Can I submit claims if I’m ePrescribing as a pre-licensed clinician under supervision?
If you’re ePrescribing as a pre-licensed clinician under supervision, we recommend submitting claims outside of SimplePractice. When you add ePrescribe to your SimplePractice account, the field for your NPI remains locked, and you won’t be able to edit it to be able to bill insurance under your supervisor’s NPI, which insurance payers typically require. In this case, we recommend creating and downloading claims for submission outside of SimplePractice so that you can enter your supervisor’s informationI on the downloaded claims.
For more information, see Billing insurance under your supervisor's credentials.
How can I resend the ePrescribe invitation to a team member?
You can only resend an ePrescribe invite to a team member that has Setup pending for their Prescribing status under Feature access at their team member profile.

To resend an ePrescribe invite:
- Navigate to Settings > Team > Team members
- Click the name of the team member in question
- Under ePrescribe, click View
- Select Resend ePrescribe invitation
How can I view a clinician’s ePrescribe status?
To view your own ePrescribe status:
- Navigate to Settings > Profile > Clinical info
- Under ePrescribe, view the Prescribing status
If you’re an Account Owner, to view a clinical team member’s ePrescribe status:
- Navigate to Settings > Team > Team members
- Click the name of the team member in question
- Under ePrescribe, view the status next to Prescribing status
How do I add an ePrescribe supervisor?
You can find the three types of supervisors that can be set up and their descriptions below:
Type of supervisor | Description |
Supervisor is supervising and also ePrescribing | In this case, the supervisor is also ePrescribing for their own clients in the account and will need access to view your prescriptions to be able to leave notes. The supervisor’s name and information will be on prescriptions when sent to pharmacies. |
Supervisor is only supervising | In this case, the supervisor isn’t ePrescribing in the account, but will need access to view your prescriptions to be able to leave notes. The supervisor’s name and information will be on prescriptions when sent to pharmacies. |
Supervisor’s name needs to be on the prescription only | In this case, the supervisor’s name and information only need to be on prescriptions when sent to pharmacies. The supervisor isn’t ePrescribing in your account and won’t be able to view prescriptions within DrFirst. |
To add an ePrescibe supervisor, please reach out to our team.

You can give a “clinical staff” role in DrFirst to a team member in your group practice, so that they can queue prescriptions or send prescriptions to pharmacies (non-controlled substances only) on your behalf.

Check the box for either:
- Practice manager
- Clinician and Entire practice
- Click Continue
- Add additional permissions as needed

- Click Save changes
Note:There's an additional monthly cost per practice manager and/or clinician that you add to your group practice. For more information, see Adding and managing team members. For “clinical staff” roles in DrFirst, the monthly ePrescribing fee is waived.
