Recording client medications

If you don’t use ePrescribe within SimplePractice, you can still request and document a client’s list of medications in their profile. This guide explains how to collect this information during intake and how to record it in Client Notes.

Note: If you’d like to ePrescribe directly within SimplePractice, see Adding ePrescribe to your SimplePractice account.

Requesting medications during the intake process

You may request an up-to-date list of medications from your clients or contacts at any time. To streamline this process, you can request this information through the Client Portal by creating a customized intake form. The template can then be shared out to clients. For more information, see:

Once the intake form has been completed by the client, you can access it from the client's Files tab.

Note: If you need to request medications from a third party, such as a client’s family member or doctor, you can add them as a contact to securely send your request. To learn more, see Enhanced Client Management for minors.

Adding medications to Client Notes

Many clinicians choose to keep an updated medication list in the Client Notes section of the client’s file.

Tip: Clinicians can choose to also keep this information readily available on the client’s Overview page via an admin note.

To add medication information to Client Notes:

  1. Navigate to the client’s Overview
  2. Click Edit
  3. Scroll down to the Client Notes section
Client Notes section in a client profile in SimplePractice.
  1. In the Client Notes field, include the client’s current list of medications and prescriptions
  2. Click Save Client

Client Notes can be edited at any time if there’s a change to the client’s medications or dosage.

Note: For more information on editing a client’s file, see Editing a client's information.

Any information entered in the Client Notes field will be included in the Contacts section of a data export. To learn more about data exports, see Exporting client information through data exports

Important: For group practices, the Client Notes section is visible to multiple clinical and non-clinical roles. To learn more about which team members can view this field, see Clinician roles available for team members and Administrative roles available for team members.
